Hey everyone,
This is not something I've yet sat down and figured out, its a working idea in progress. But its about playing basic chords using only the three treble strings of the guitar the G, B, and E strings.
Why you ask? Well its all about learning and understanding the guitar better than before.
What I'm looking to do, and I'll start with D major as an example, is to find chords up and down the neck of the guitar that use only these three strings. D major first of all contains the notes D, E, F#, G, A, B, and C#. So all you need is chords containing these notes.
The strings progress through the notes in order. The third string G, Ab, A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G. The second string B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, Ab, A, Bb, B. And the first string E, F, F#, G, Ab, A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E. Write these notes into three columns and then write the numbers of the frets in another column. The first fret is "open" then numbered 1 to 12. Now just pick out the notes which are in D major and start making chords.
So to get you started, in tab xxx000, xxx022, xxx220, xxx435, xxx775, xxx989, xxx979, and so on... There are many more combinations I am sure. You may even just discover that the three open strings, barre at the second fret, barre at the seventh fret, and barre at twelvth fret are all chords in D major. And if you barre these three notes and you change only one of the three notes then the other two notes will already be contained in D major. That will make finding new chord combinations easier.
I do want to sit down and figure all of this out for myself and of course to expand to other musical keys as well. But if anybody finds anything interesting please let me know. And of course if anyone wants to try it say in D minor: D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C, D.
Happy playing,
Anthony
